Introduction to Shifter Karts

Birel ICC 125cc

Shifter karts are often considered the epitome of go-kart racing. They are the fastest karts out there. Engines are all 125cc but have different origins. Long popular is the "Moto" class, where the engine is a 125cc motorcross engine. Most popular and last remaining is the Honda CR 125. In the early 2000's, karting purists brought back the "ICC" engine, also a 125cc 6 speed (like the CR 125 Honda) but an engine designed and built solely for kart racing. These engines are faster, and more expensive, specially once they have been blue-printed. The third option in shifter kart racing is the spec Rotax max DD2 class, which utilizes a Rotax 125cc coupled to a 2 speed gearbox. All shifter classes now have front brakes.

Oakland Valley Race Park would like to see and promote the rebirth of the "Stock Moto" class, which uses a spec Honda CR 125 with restricted tuning and porting. The goal is to keep cost down and once again offer affordable shifter kart racing. Hannen Motorsports offers a spec Honda package for any one of the Birel shifter chassis listed below.
