Karting Sanctioning Bodies

Kart Racing is sanctioned by a number of sanctioning bodies in the USA.

World Karting Association

The largest organization is the World Karting Association (WKA), headquartered in Charlotte, NC.

"The World Karting Association (WKA) is a membership- owned, non-profit corporation formed in 1971 to regulate and promote the sport of competitive kart racing. We establish the rules and procedures to set standards by which to sanction tracks and to conduct annual championships for various types of karting. WKA has grown to over 10,000 active members and 120 sanctioned tracks nationwide to make it the largest sanctioning body for kart racing in the United States and one of the largest in the world."

Rotax Max Challenge

The Rotax Max Challenge has become hugely popular since its inception in the early 2000's.

"Whether your goal is to compete at the highest level or enjoy a weekend of racing with friends, the Rotax Kart Challenge is for you. It all starts at the local level and through a feeder system of local, regional, national, and world championships... The series is based around the ROTAX kart engine. There are 6 classes, satisfying ages 8 to 80 and 5 of the 6 classes utilize the same FR-125cc engine."

Oakland Valley Race Park will be hosting the 2010 Rotax Max New York State Regional Challenge, a qulifying series for the Rotax Max Challenge US Grand Nationals that will be held this year at New Castle, IN, in July.

The six race series will take place on three weekends, April 24-25, August 28-29, and October 23-24. For more details about the Rotax Max Challenge NY State Regional Challenge at OVRP, and to register, go to our schedule.

SuperkartsUSA

SuperkartsUSA, formerly known as SKUSA, was founded in the 1990's as an exclusive venue for shifter kart racing. (Shifter karts are typically equipped with 6 speed, 125cc, watercooled engines , have front brakes and are capable, in their sprint configuration, of speeds in excess of 110 MPH on some of the fastest go-kart tracks!) Due to escalading costs, the sport lost popularity on a grassroots level but SuperkartsUSA's SuperNationals in las Vegas remain the biggest karting event of the year, attended in 2009 by none other than Michael Schumacher (just days before making public his contract with Mercedes to drive in F1 in 2010).

International Karting Federation

IKF is popular mostly on the West Coast.

"The International Kart Federation (IKF) takes pride in its long record of achievement as a governing body for the sport of kart racing. In recognition of the need for controls over the sport, the International Kart Federation has published rules for competition since November 21, 1957. Throughout this time, the objectives of the Federation have been the same: to foster strong and fair competition; to provide reasonable rules for the various types of competition; to administer the competition program with impartiality, and to reduce the hazards associated with this sport."
